Aqua Vitae -- Bronze Pendant

Aqua Vitae -- Bronze Pendant

'Aqua Vitae' is an archaism with usage running as far back as Saint Patrick, and was widely used in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to refer to various distillations of wine, such as whiskey and brandy. In its purest form it refers to ethanol; a substance of particular interest to alchemists. It should come as no surprise that distillation of this 'water of life' was a popular experiment among alchemists of the day. As the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam reminds us,

Whether the Cup with sweet or bitter run,
The Wine of Life keeps oozing drop by drop,
The Leaves of Life keep falling one by one.

And so, the symbol of Aqua Vitae is a fair reminder for us to each day celebrate the precious drops of life.
